I Can Relate: A 1930's Cinematic Diary
Media tends to intertwine with our daily activities. Whether it is social media, mass media or commercial media, it all plays with our perceptions and emotions, while influencing our likes, dislikes and personal choices. It is not a recent phenomenon. As a devotee of 1930’s B movies presented on small screen television, I began to notice the variety of heightened emotions conveyed in the faces and gestures of the actresses as they portrayed dramatic and comedic scenes from that era. I discovered that turning down the sound enhances a reading of their underlying attitudes. And I found myself acknowledging that I could relate. Seemingly dated cinematic media was offering back my own current thoughts and feelings as I dealt with my everyday existence.
I wondered what it would look like to create movie stills from my television set, freezing those emotions that seemed to resonate with my life. The characteristics of my favorite iPhone app, combined with random 1930's movie scenes and the waves and lines of an old television, have allowed me to create a haphazard, yet accurate, visual record of my personal diary.
